UI to hold convocation celebration to welcome new students Aug. 23

The University of Iowa will revive an old tradition this year with a convocation celebration on the Pentacrest during Welcome Week. The convocation will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, on the west side of the Pentacrest with the ringing of the bell on the Old Capitol.

The convocation will convey to students the importance of becoming a Hawkeye by describing the IOWA Challenge, a mission statement for UI students that stresses important principles for succeeding in the classroom and beyond.

"I am thrilled that an opening ceremony for new students is returning to the University of Iowa's campus," said Tom Rocklin, interim vice president for student services and dean of students. "The class of 2013's convocation will give the faculty and staff of the university the opportunity to welcome our new students and to ask them to commit to the ideals of the IOWA Challenge: to excel, stretch, engage, choose and serve."

UI President Sally Mason and UI Executive Vice President and Provost Wallace Loh will give new students an official welcome into the Hawkeye family. Simone Renault, a member of the incoming class of 2013, will speak on behalf of her class. She earned the honor after winning a YouTube video contest held to pick a first-year student speaker. Current UI students Casey Koschmeder and Alper Tuken will give their perspectives to the incoming class, and Associate Provost for Faculty Susan Johnson also will speak.

The convocation will end with the Iowa Fight Song and a procession to the president's residence for a block party offering free food and entertainment by DJ Zato.

Convocation is part of Welcome Week at the UI, Aug. 22-28. For more information on Welcome Week, visit http://welcome.uiowa.edu, or contact the UI Office of Student Life at 319-335-3059. For more information on the IOWA challenge, visit http://thechallenge.uiowa.edu/.
