UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences announces scholarships

Linda Maxson, dean of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has announced the winners of the college's scholarships for 2009-10. The scholarships honor 36 of the college's best and brightest students.

Recipients are listed alphabetically by hometown with Iowa natives listed first.

Iowa

AUBURN - Emily Pudenz, a sophomore from Auburn, Iowa, received the F.C. Denkmann Liberal Arts & Sciences Scholarship. Pudenz is a 2008 graduate of Southern Cal High School and the niece of David and Nancy Pudenz.

BOONE - Molly Peterson, a junior from Boone, Iowa, was awarded the Kathleen K. Beninga Scholarship. Peterson is a 2006 graduate of Ogden High School and is the daughter of Scott and Peg Peterson. She is studying microbiology in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

CEDAR RAPIDS - Juliana Khouri, a senior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received the James and Syndy Conger Scholarship. Khouri is a 2005 graduate of Washington High School and is the daughter of Elias and Irene Khouri. She is studying Spanish and secondary education and pursuing an English as a Second Language endorsement.

CEDAR RAPIDS - Scott Seltrecht, a first-year student from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received the Shoemaker-Strickler Memorial Scholarship. The 2009 graduate of Prairie High School is the son of Timothy and Patricia Seltrecht. He plans to study chemistry in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

CEDAR RAPIDS - Angela B. Stolte, a senior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was awarded the Lennis J. Holm Scholarship. Stotle is a 1999 graduate of Washington High School and the daughter of Bill and Diane Stolte. She is majoring in English and history in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

COLFAX - Colorado Reed, a first-year student from Colfax, Iowa, received the Faith M. Knowler Scholarship. Reed, a 2008 graduate of Colfax-Mingo High School, plans to study psychology and computer programming in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Parents of the student are James and JoAnne Reed.

COON RAPIDS - Ian Richardson, a sophomore from Coon Rapids, Iowa, received the Winifred S. Scott Scholarship. Richardson is a 2007 graduate of Coon Rapids-Bayard High School and the son of John and Sharon Richardson and Geraldine and James Thacker. He is studying music (voice and string bass performance) in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

DAVENPORT - Nicholas Meister, a senior from Davenport, Iowa, was awarded the Edward Prichett Scholarship. Meister is a 1995 graduate of Central High School and the son of Jim and Jo Meister. He is majoring in fine art painting and minoring in photography in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

DES MOINES - Alex Flesher, a sophomore from Des Moines, Iowa, received the Ralph K. and Maxine J. Hibbs Scholarship. Flesher is a 2007 graduate of Dowling Catholic High School and the son of Kimberly Thompson and Bruce Flesher. He is majoring in English and philosophy (pre-law) and minoring in theater in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

DES MOINES - Tom Harmon, a junior from Des Moines, Iowa, received the Adelaide Boerner Trickey Scholarship. Harmon, a 2007 graduate of Roosevelt High School, is majoring in psychology and biology in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He is the son of Ann and Bob Harmon.

DES MOINES - Alexandra Nassif, a first-year student from Des Moines, Iowa, was awarded the William and Effa McMeans Scholarship. Nassif is a 2009 graduate of Roosevelt High School and the daughter of William and Joan Nassif. She plans to major in international studies, offered through the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and International Programs.

DUBUQUE - Kristen Jogerst, a first-year student from Dubuque, Iowa, received the Winifred S. Scott Scholarship. Jogerst is a 2008 graduate of Hempstead High School and the daughter of James and Geralyn Jogerst. She is interested in studying integrative physiology and French in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

DUBUQUE - Alicia Maxwell, a junior from Dubuque, Iowa, received the Velma E. Stuit Scholarship. Maxwell is a 2007 graduate of Dubuque Senior High School and the daughter of Karla and Steve Maxwell. She is majoring in physics and astronomy and mathematics and minoring in theater in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

IOWA CITY - Hodna Bentali Gharsallah Nuernberg, a sophomore from Iowa City, Iowa, and Oshkosh, Wis., received the Alexander Kern Scholarship. The student is majoring in French and Arabic in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Parents are Ali Gharsallah and Susan Nuernberg.

IOWA CITY - Andrew Meisner, a sophomore from Iowa City, Iowa, received the Richard J. Odem Scholarship. Meisner is a 2008 graduate of West High School and the son of Richard and Marjorie Meisner. He is majoring in economics and minoring in English.

IOWA CITY - Hayley Richardson, a senior from Iowa City, Iowa, received the Mary Goodykoontz Barnes Scholarship. Richardson is a 2006 graduate of City High School and is the daughter of Bob and Judy Richardson. She is majoring in studio art in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

MANCHESTER - Alyssa Feldmann, a sophomore from Manchester, Iowa, received the Margaret Foster Hoff Memorial Scholarship. Feldman is a 2007 graduate of West Delaware High School and the daughter of Jim and Tina Shover. She is majoring in international studies and Spanish in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

MARION - Alyssa Perry, a first-year student from Marion, Iowa, received the William and Effa McMeans Scholarship. Perry is a 2009 graduate of Linn Mar High School and the daughter of Rick and Michelle Perry. She is majoring in English and theatre arts and minoring in psychology in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

OAKVILLE - Kaylee Lanz, a sophomore from Oakville, Iowa, received the Alexander Kern Scholarship. Lanz is a 2007 graduate of Wapello High School and the daughter of Monte and Kelly Lanz. She is majoring in chemistry in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

OSCEOLA - Morgan Miller, a 2009 graduate of Clarke Community High School, received the William and Effa McMeans Scholarship. Miller is studying theater and English (creative writing) in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Parents of the student are Mel and Lisa Miller.

SOLON - Garrett Funk, a senior from Solon, Iowa, received the Shoemaker-Strickler Memorial Scholarship. Funk is a graduate of Solon High School and the son of Gerry and Suzanne Funk. He is majoring in physics in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

SPERRY - Elizabeth Weyer, a sophomore from Sperry, Iowa, received the Alexander Kern Scholarship. Weyer is a 2007 graduate of Mediapolis High School and is the daughter of John and Marian Weyer. She is studying pre-law and political science in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

URBANDALE - Michael Renjie Li, a junior from Urbandale, Iowa (and previously Ithaca, N.Y.), received the Nadyne Harris Scholarship. He is a 2006 graduate of Ithaca High School and the son of Jiming Li and Xioyan Liu. He is studying microbiology and psychology in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

URBANDALE - Jeffrey Vial, a first-year student from Urbandale, Iowa, was awarded the William and Effa McMeans Scholarship. He is a 2009 graduate of Dowling Catholic High School and the son of Paul and Mary Vial.

VILLISCA - Jackie Herzberg, a sophomore from Villisca, Iowa, received the George S. Schaeffer Scholarship. She is a 2007 graduate of Villisca Community Schools and the daughter of Mark and Dawnette Herzberg. She is studying integrative physiology on a pre-medicine track in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

WATERLOO - Alex Fischels, a senior from Waterloo, Iowa, was awarded the Kay Keeshan Hamod Scholarship. Fischels is a 2006 graduate of West High School and the son of John Fischels and Tracey Fischels. He is studying history in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

WATERLOO - Jesh Harbaugh-Williams, a junior from Waterloo, Iowa, was awarded the David W. Koehser Scholarship. Harbaugh-Williams is a 2006 graduate of West High School and the son of Dennis Harbaugh and Juanita Williams. He is majoring in political science, minoring in sociology, and earning certificates in philosophies and ethics of politics, law and economics in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

WAVERLY - Peter Doely, a junior from Waverly, Iowa, received the Bill and John Fenton Scholarship. Doely, a 2003 graduate of Waverly-Shell Rock High School, is the son of David and Cheryl Doely. He is majoring in classical languages and minoring in economics.

Illinois

MARENGO - Marlee Davis-Hansen, a senior from Marengo, Ill., received the Ralph K. and Maxine J. Hibbs Scholarship. Davis-Hansen was home schooled, graduating from high school in 2006. She is the daughter of Todd and Desi Davis. At the UI, she is majoring in integrative physiology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

MORTON - Colleen McGlaughlin, a senior from Morton, Ill., received the ER Johnson Prize. McGlaughlin, a 2005 graduate of Morton High School, majored in actuarial science in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She is the daughter of Mack and Kim McGlaughlin.

PEORIA - Stefanie Pinkney, a first-year student from Peoria, Ill., was awarded the William and Effa McMeans Scholarship. Pinkney is a 2009 graduate of Peoria Christian High School and is the daughter of George and Debbie Pinkney. She plans to study English in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

WINNETKA - James Roth, a junior from Winnetka, Ill., received the Mary Campbell Tow Scholarship. Roth is a 2006 graduate of New Trier High School and the son of Marc and Elizabeth Roth. He is majoring in history and English in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Minnesota

EDINA - Michael Fetterman, a first-year student from Edina, Minn., was awarded the William and Effa McMeans Scholarship. Fetterman is a graduate of Edina High School and the son of Jeff and Laurie Fetterman. He is majoring in English and minoring in Journalism and Mass Communication in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Nebraska

OMAHA - Matthew S. Vodicka, a junior from Omaha, Nebraska, received the Mary Pelechek Scholarship. Vodicka is a 2001 graduate of Papillion-La Vista High School and the son of Steven and Kathleen Vodicka. He is majoring in theater arts and comparative literature in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Texas

CHINA - Alys Rodriguez, a junior from China, Texas, received the Nadyne Harris Scholarship. Rodriguez is a 2006 graduate of Hardin-Jefferson High School and is the daughter of Ray and Vickie Rodriguez. She is majoring in math in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Wisconsin

EAU CLAIRE - Maria Drout, a junior from Eau Claire, Wis., received the Velma E. Stuit Scholarship. Drout is a 2006 graduate of Regis High School and the daughter of Robin and Becky Drout. She is majoring in physics and astronomy in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

OSHKOSH - Hodna Bentali Gharsallah Nuernberg, a sophomore from Iowa City, Iowa, and Oshkosh, Wis., received the Alexander Kern Scholarship. The student is majoring in French and Arabic in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Parents are Ali Gharsallah and Susan Nuernberg.
