Feb. 24 pancake promotion will benefit UI Children's Hospital

Iowans can enjoy a free serving of pancakes from 7 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, and make a free will donation to benefit patients and families at University of Iowa Children's Hospital in Iowa City.

IHOP restaurants across the nation will serve one free short stack of pancakes per customer in celebration of National Pancake Day.

Donations to IHOP's national charity partner, Children's Miracle Network, will help improve the lives of children at the 170 Children's Miracle Network hospitals nationwide. All funds raised at nine IHOP restaurants around the region will benefit UI Children's Hospital.

UI alumna to speak on human trafficking Feb. 25

University of Iowa alumna Adeyemi "Yemi" Oshodi, director of Anti-Trafficking Programs at World Hope International in Washington, D.C., will present "Human Trafficking: Tried, True and New Solutions to Fight the New Face of Slavery" from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, in the Richey Ballroom at the Iowa Memorial Union.

Oshodi manages anti-trafficking care and support and has worked on international advocacy issues that focus on HIV/AIDS, child survival and other global health projects in six countries. She received a master's degree in Third World development support in 2003 from the UI.

The event is sponsored by the UI College of Nursing, UI Center for Human Rights, Iowa Human Awareness Trafficking Project and Iowa City Foreign Relations Council.

UI football team to donate blood Feb. 27

Players and coaches with the University of Iowa football program will help the DeGowin Blood Center by donating blood from 8 a.m. to noon Friday, Feb. 27, in the UI Football Complex.

The donations will benefit patients of UI Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Members of the UI football program first teamed up with the DeGowin Blood Center in 2006. More than 30,000 units of donated blood products were transfused last year at UI Hospitals and Clinics to patients ranging from premature infants to adults receiving surgery and treatments for cancer.

Poet Craig Arnold reads at Prairie Lights Feb. 27

Poet Craig Arnold will read from "Made Flesh" at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, in the Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City. This "Live from Prairie Lights" series event will be streamed live and archived on the University of Iowa Writing University Web site http://writinguniversity.uiowa.edu.

Arnold, whose "Shells" was a Yale Series of Younger Poets selection in 1999, addresses incarnation in his long awaited second collection, the recipient a Publishers Weekly starred review.

A faculty member at the University of Wyoming, Arnold has received the Rome Prize, an NEA Fellowship, the Amy Lowell Poetry Traveling Scholarship, the Atherton Fellowship to Breadloaf, a MadDowell colony residency and the Hodder Fellowship from Princeton.

UI Recreational Services offers spring break mini tennis camp March 16-19

University of Iowa Recreational Services is offering mini tennis camp taught by Michele Conlon during spring break Monday, March 16 through Thursday, March 19 at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.

The registration fee of $100 is due 5 p.m. Friday, March 13. Registration may be done by phone with a credit card (384-1215) or in person at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex, 2820 Prairie Meadow Drive in Iowa City.

Classes for First through eight graders will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., high school students 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Classes will be divided according to age and experience from beginner to advanced.
