UI partners with community colleges to provide on-site bachelor degrees

The University of Iowa and two Iowa community colleges have partnered to bring UI course work to community college campuses starting in the fall 2009. The community colleges are Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) and Eastern Iowa Community College District (EICCD) in the Quad Cities.

Students who are completing their Associate in Science (AS) or Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree may continue to take UI courses during the fall and spring semester at each of the community colleges.

Courses will be delivered using online technology with face-to-face support and discussion. To complete degree requirements from a distance, students must also take additional online course work.

The partnership allows DMACC and EICCD students to pursue four different tracks within the Bachelor of Applied Studies degree. The four tracks are General Studies, Nonprofit Management Certificate, the Entrepreneurial Management Certificate and Justice Studies. Justice Studies is currently under development.

"This partnership extends the reach of the university and allows students from across Iowa the opportunity to earn a Big Ten degree," Chet Rzonca, dean of the UI Division of Continuing Education, said.

UI Division of Continuing Education advisors will visit each community college on a regular basis to help students plan a course of study and achieve their educational goals.

"A lot of people who graduate at community colleges become place-bound," Rzonca said. "They are not about to pick up their roots and come to Iowa City and so the program allows more people to continue on their path for higher education, making them more competitive in the job market."
