UI Writers' Workshop alumna Z.Z. Packer reads May 1

Fiction writer Z.Z. Packer, an alumna of the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, will read from her work in a free, public event at 8 p.m. Friday, May 1, in the Frank Conroy Reading Room of the Dey House on the UI campus.

Packer burst onto the literary scene in the 2000 Debut Fiction issue of The New Yorker, and that story became the title story of her first book, "Drinking Coffee Elsewhere," which won nearly universal rave reviews, was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award and was selected by John Updike for the "Today Show" Book Club.

A Booklist review described her writing as "full of youthful angst and irreverence, yet polished, professional and captivating."

Her work was more recently featured in the anthologies "Granta Best of Young American Novelists 2," "Best American Short Stories" and "New Stories from the South: The Year's Best, 2008." She has received a Whiting Writers' Award, a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers' Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship, and she was a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University.

The Writers' Workshop is a graduate program of the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
