Registration under way for RiverRun at UI

Registration is now under way for the University of Iowa's 30th annual RiverRun, Sunday, April 26, when race participants can run, walk or wheelchair the course that winds through Iowa City along the Iowa River.

The University of Iowa's RiverRun is a 5K run/walk/wheelchair and 10K run/wheelchair race. Awards will be presented to the winners of the 5K and 10K men's, women's, and wheelchair divisions, as well as the top three males and females in each age division. All race participants are eligible to win prizes at the Fitness Fair, if present, after the race. RiverRun is also looking for volunteers on race day.

The 5K and 10K races both begin at 9 a.m. at the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU) on the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Madison Street. Runners can participate individually, or with friends by signing up for the 5K team competition. Proceeds from the race will benefit Uptown Bill's Small Mall of Iowa City, a collection of businesses owned and operated by people with disabilities. Runners may register the day of the race from 6:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. in the IMU's Main Lounge, or prior to race day online at http://www.uiowa.edu/~riverrun. Early registration discounts are available for UI students and non-students.

"Last year, we had nearly 1,700 runners and raised over $26,000 for Uptown Bill's. This year we hope to do even better -- our goal is 2,000 runners and $30,000 for Uptown Bill's," said RiverRun executive director, Pasha Korsakov.

Timing chips are new to RiverRun this year; all runners must pick up a chip the morning of the race regardless of when a runner registered for the race. Runners must wear a small, lightweight chip affixed to their shoe that identifies them as they cross electronic mats at the finish line. Chip timing electronically handles the task of collecting and processing results at the end of the race. The chip must be picked up and returned after the race. Failure to wear or return the chip will result in no finishing time being recorded and a fine of $10.

RiverRun will have a Team Theme Competition with prizes awarded to the top three teams who dress in costume best related to their team's name. Other activities include a 5K Team Competition, the 50-yard Hawkeye Hustle for children ages 2-8 at 10:30 a.m. at Hubbard Park, and Fitness Fair where local vendors will be present from 9 a.m. to noon at Hubbard Park.
