Newly admitted students gather on UI Admissions Facebook page

More than 1,000 students admitted for the fall semester have become fans of a Facebook page created by the University of Iowa's Office of Admissions, which is using the popular social media network to help prospective students connect with the university and one another.

On the Students Admitted for Fall 2009 page, students have posted information about their hometowns, summer orientation dates, possible majors and first choices for a residence halls. They've also used the page to "friend" other incoming students using Facebook.

Many students following the page say they're excited to be coming to the UI in the fall, including Megan Geraets "from the good ole' cheese state of Wisconsin." Geraets said via a Facebook post that she is "majoring in speech and language sciences!! Feel free to message me if you are excited to come to u of iowa like I am!! August can't come any sooner!!"

The responses came after the Office of Admissions sent the admitted students an e-mail in late March inviting them to become fans of the page.

Michael Barron, director of admissions and assistant provost for enrollment services, said the goal of the Facebook pages is to help students make connections with one another before they arrive on campus, and to provide a forum for answering answer questions about the admissions process in a format that is familiar to students. Questions posted in a Facebook discussion group have included how to get Hawkeye football tickets, what housing options there are at the UI, and how to join clubs, organizations and sports teams.

In addition to the Students Admitted for Fall 2009 page, the office of admissions created pages for transfer students, international students, and one page with announcements from the office itself.

Anyone with a Facebook account, which is free, can become a fan of the pages. The pages may be found at:
