Violinist Conklin will play 'Southern Comforts' with Symphony Band April 15
Violinist Scott Conklin, a member of the faculty of the University of Iowa School of Music, will perform a piece written specifically for him when he appears as a soloist with the UI Symphony Band and conductor Mark Heidel, at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, in the second-floor Ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union.
"We have a wonderful program, with something for all musical tastes," Heidel said. "The program is extremely diverse, featuring several modern works that are relatively new to the wind band repertoire, as well as traditional works that have been regularly performed by bands for many years.
"I am especially excited about programming 'Southern Comforts' by Joel Puckett, a work for reduced ensemble that was completed in 2008. It was written for Scott Conklin and Robert Ambrose, and I am thrilled that Conklin will be performing the solo violin part with us on the concert."
The composer commented, "In 'Southern Comforts' I am sharing some of the things that were important to me growing up in Atlanta or have become important in trying to remember home. Each movement is my representation of a memory or item from my childhood in the South."
The concert will also feature UI graduate student Michael D. Hart as a guest conductor. The complete program will be:
--"Lollapalooza" by John Adams, transcribed for band by James Spinazzola.
Conklin joined the UI faculty in the fall of 2005. An honorary "Kentucky Colonel," he has performed as a violin soloist with the Louisville, Nashville and Berlin symphonies. He is a first place winner of the Music Teachers National Association Competition and was a featured artist at the 2004 MTNA National Conference. He regularly performs as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player and has appeared on a wide variety of concert series and college campuses throughout the country. A tubist, he has performed with The Fargo-Moorhead Symphony, the UI Symphony Band, the Concordia College Band and Orchestra and the Absolute Brass Quintet.
