University of Iowa News Release

Award-winning UI poets Collins and Thirkield read April 14

Arda Collins and Jonathan Thirkield, alumni of the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop who have recently received major honors, will share a free reading at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, in the Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City. The "Live from Prairie Lights" series event will be streamed live and then archived on the UI Writing University Web site, http://writinguniversity.uiowa.edu.

Collins' "It Is Daylight" was selected by Louise Gluck for the Yale Series of Younger Poets, and Thirkield's "The Waker's Corridor" was just published as the winner of the Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets.

All measures of time -- psychological, personal, historical, numerical -- collide and overlap in Thirkield's lyrical verse. His collection is by turns dreamlike and sternly rational, arcane and contemporary, intimate and dramatic.

Thirkield was a Truman Capote Fellow in the Writers' Workshop. His poems have appeared in Web Conjunctions, New American Writing, the Colorado Review, 1913: a journal of forms, American Letters & Commentary and other journals.

Gluck wrote, "Arda Collins' savage, desolate, brutally ironic first book has the electric excitement of a master performance conducted in a deliberately isolated space, as though isolation were a form of control that promoted fluency... At the heart of the poems' struggle is shame, which results not from something the speaker has done, from action, but rather from being, from what she is or what she lacks...

"This is a book of dazzling modernity . . . Caustic, pithy, ruthlessly sharp witted and keen-eyed . . . The result is a book of astonishing originality and intensity, unprecedented, unrepeatable."

Collins poems have been published in journals and magazines including The New Yorker, the American Poetry Review and A Public Space. She was a Glenn Schaeffer Fellow in the Writers' Workshop.

The Writers' Workshop is a graduate program in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
