UI Foundation sets new UI fundraising record

The University of Iowa Foundation announced that in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008, the organization raised $161,893,572 in outright and deferred gifts for areas throughout the University of Iowa, an increase of 9.3 percent over the previous fiscal year.

The figure included an all-time high of $96,746,495 in outright gifts, a 10.6 percent increase in such gifts over fiscal year 2007.

UI Foundation President and CEO Lynette L. Marshall said the record-setting generosity of alumni, friends, corporations, foundations and other organizations helps the UI better fulfill its mission of providing superior education, research and service.

"Because so many committed contributors have stepped forward to make gifts, more UI students, faculty and staff will enjoy extraordinary opportunities to learn, teach, discover and serve," Marshall said. "Those gifts came in all sizes and touched every college and major program of the UI. I am grateful to our donors and our many fundraising partners, who worked tirelessly to advance the university."

Other UI Foundation and UI fundraising highlights from fiscal year 2008 include:

--More than 64,000 donors made 104,389 gifts.

--Deferred gifts and pledges to be received in future years totaled $65,147,076, an increase of 7.4 percent over the previous year.

--Gifts made directly to the University of Iowa totaled $26,268,499, a decrease of 8.0 percent from the previous year. (The UI acknowledges the UI Foundation as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university.)

--The combined total of charitable gifts to the UI Foundation and the UI equaled $188,162,071, an increase of 6.5 percent over fiscal year 2007.

--More than 99 percent of fiscal year 2008 gifts were directed by donors to the specific UI programs they wished to support, ranging from student financial aid to faculty support and research.

UI President Sally Mason said the results demonstrated an essential partnership between the university and the UI Foundation.

"In today's higher-education environment, the ability to supplement state, institutional and federal grant resources with private philanthropic support is crucial to any university's ability to excel and thrive," Mason said.

"Here at the University of Iowa, we are extremely fortunate to work with the UI Foundation, which stands as a model nationwide for higher-education fundraising organizations," Mason added. "On behalf of the entire UI community, I extend my congratulations and gratitude to the UI Foundation."
