Campbell reads from new poetry collection Oct. 27

Poet Rick Campbell will read from his third collection, "Dixmont," at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, in the Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City. Listen live via the University of Iowa Writing University Web site

Campbell is also the author of "Setting the World in Order," which won the Walt McDonald Prize.

Micheal Hettich wrote in NewPages that "Dixmont" is "a powerful, honest, finely crafted book of emotionally honed poems whose cumulative effect is simultaneously harrowing and life-affirming. Quite simply, 'Dixmont' is the real thing, a genuine contribution to our poetry."

Iowa Poet Laureate Robert Dana, a graduate of the UI Writer's Workshop, wrote, "'Dixmont' is more than a blip on the Doppler screen of American poetry; it measures the weather of our times. Against a background of wars past and present, Rick Campbell wages his own personal battles on several fronts. With an alchemist's magic, he mixes the artifacts of impermanence."

Campbell, who teaches at Florida A&M University, has won an NEA Fellowship, a Pushcart Prize and two fellowships from the Florida Arts Council. He is the director of Anhinga Press and the Anhinga Prize for Poetry, and the founder of the Florida Literary Arts Coalition. His poems and essays have appeared in the Georgia Review, the Missouri Review, the Tampa Review, the Southern Poetry Review, Puerto Del Sol, Prairie Schooner and other journals.
