University Theatres Gallery series presents production in Deadwood Upstairs
The University Theatres Gallery series will present "A Blue We All Know," a new experiential play by Iowa Playwrights Workshop graduate student Lisa Leaverton, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 23-26, in the Deadwood Upstairs at 6 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City.
The production, directed by Tim Grady, includes a "live sound event," featuring compositions by George Marie and Tackfu.
Leaverton says, "'A Blue We All Know' is about the dangers of losing one's place, whether you are a New York artist, a woman within a doomed marriage, or a lost whale. This play examines our increasing disembodiment, as we dream ourselves and other species into oblivion."
In collaboration with director John Kaufman, Leaverton runs a collective devoted to audience-dependent, ephemeral theatre. Her one-act, "Perhaps," was read recently in the Outward Bound Series at CSPS in Cedar Rapids. "Why Love Doesn't Recognize Its Name," for which she received a Richard Maibaum Scholarship, was featured at Iowa New Play Festival last spring.
After the June flood shut down the UI Theatre Building, depriving the Department of Theatre Arts of its usual venues, Deadwood owner Jim Bell donated the use of the large, informal Deadwood Upstairs space. In the configuration for this Gallery production there will be seating for 55.
Admission will be $5 at the door.
