Major project to disrupt traffic on Grand Avenue, Riverside Drive Oct. 14-Nov. 8

A project to replace damaged underground steam distribution piping beneath Riverside Drive and Grand Avenue on the University of Iowa campus will disrupt traffic from the middle of October through early November.

Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 14, a portion of the Grand Avenue median near Byington Road will be removed to allow for construction of a cross-over drive required for later phases in the project. East and west-bound traffic on Grand Avenue will be reduced to one lane each direction.

Beginning late Saturday evening, Oct. 18, and finishing Tuesday, Oct. 21, one southbound lane of Riverside Drive and two westbound lanes of Grand Avenue will be closed. Two-way traffic on Grand Avenue will be accommodated with one lane in either direction on the south side of the median.

Traffic on Grand Avenue should be returned to normal early Saturday, Nov. 8. Signs and traffic controls will be in place throughout the construction period. Emergency vehicles and the general public will be able to access the University Hospital's emergency entrance via westbound Grand Avenue. However, use of alternate routes may be advisable due to anticipated traffic congestion at rush hours. Suggested detours will be marked to assist motorists via Newton Road, and via Highway 1 and Mormon Trek Boulevard.

To view a map of the construction project and details of the various phases of the project visit or call Charles Saxton at 335-5496 for more information.
