Great American Smokeout set Nov. 20; UI resources available
Health experts at the University of Iowa encourage tobacco users to participate Nov. 20 in the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout, which urges smokers to quit for a day in the hope that they may quit for good.
Information on smoking cessation education and resources for UI faculty, staff and students is available online at http://www.uiowa.edu/homepage/smoking/education.html. The site includes information on Quitline Iowa (800-QUIT-NOW), the toll free smoking cessation counseling service available to all Iowans.
The entire UI campus became smoke-free on July 1, 2008, following the Smoke-Free Air Act signed by Iowa Gov. Chet Culver. Details on the university's smoking policy are available online at http://www.uiowa.edu/homepage/smoking/index.html.
Mother's Milk Bank holds ribbon-cutting event, open house Nov. 21
The Mother's Milk Bank of Iowa will hold a ribbon-cutting event and host an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at its new Liberty Square location at 119 2nd St., Suite 400, in Coralville.
Infants on human milk have lower hospital admission rates, fewer ear infections, rashes, and allergies, as well as less diarrhea.
All the donated milk collected and stored by Mother's Milk Bank is pasteurized. After pasteurization, it is tested for bacteria. Most immunologic and nutritional components of human milk remain intact after pasteurization.
