Local math stars to compete in national mathematics competition May 31

Some of the sharpest mathematical minds in the country will participate in the 33rd annual American Regions Mathematics League Competition Saturday, May 31. The competition, which will be held simultaneously on the campuses of the University of Iowa, University of Georgia, Penn State and University of Nevada-Las Vegas, is a team competition. The math involved is at or beyond the college calculus level.

The UI portion of the competition will be held in various rooms in the UI Adler Journalism Building and the English-Philosophy Building from 8 to 10 a.m. and then in the Second Floor Ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The competition will draw teams representing an estimated 350 high school students from throughout the Midwest, with 45 from the local community.

The Connie Belin and Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development has sponsored the event at the UI since 1991. The UI Center for Conferences is helping to plan the event.

UI Children's Hospital to host reunion for NICU families June 1

Physicians and staff at University of Iowa Children's Hospital and will celebrate with children and their families who have received care in the state's most advanced neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) during their 16th "Graduate Reunion" event from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 1, on the Krause Family Plaza outside Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City.

More than 700 people are expected to attend the event. The NICU at UI Children's Hospital, a 70-bed, state-of-the-art facility, cares for more than 850 premature and seriously ill infants each year.
