UI undergraduate receives fellowship to study information technology

Grady Lamar Payson of Austin, Texas, has been selected as the first University of Iowa undergraduate student to participate in the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) through the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The program is designed to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by enhancing economic security and improving quality of life. It offers unique research and training opportunities for undergraduates to collaborate with one another and be mentored by select faculty.

Payson is one of 15 U.S. students who received the SURF in Information Technology. Staff with the Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates and computer science faculty mentors Gregg Oden and Teodor Rus recommended him for the award.

Payson said he is honored to receive the fellowship and added that it will help prepare him for graduate school, where he plans to continue his research involving computer machine translation between natural languages, such as English and Spanish. Such work may one day benefit consumers by contributing to more efficient and accurate computerized language translation.

Payson is a computer science, linguistics and mathematics triple major in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The award provides a stipend, housing and travel expenses for the 11-week program held at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Md., a suburb of Washington D.C. Payson is the son of Dr. Tony Payson and Ellen Payson of Waco, Texas.
