Falcon banding set for May 27 and June 3

The Macbride Raptor Project will be banding young peregrine falcons at two Eastern Iowa locations May 27 and June 3.

With the help of project staff, Jodeane Cancilla, coordinator of the Macbride Raptor Project, will band several peregrine falcons at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, in the Break Room of the Louisa Generating Station, 8602 172nd St., in Muscatine. At 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, they will band more young falcons in the Second Floor Boardroom of U.S. Bank, 222 2nd Ave. SE, in Cedar Rapids.

The falcons are about 27 to 30 days old and are from the nesting boxes at each banding location. The birds come back to nest at the boxes each year. The falcons are banded for future research and measurement. The U.S. Bank and Louisa Generating Station nest boxes are two of five regional sites where wild-produced falcons are being observed and reintroduced.

UI journalism students fare well in national Hearst awards program

UI journalism students placed eighth in writing in the national Hearst Journalism Awards Program, often called "The Pulitzers" of college journalism.

Hearst holds yearlong intercollegiate competitions in writing, photography, multimedia and broadcast news for journalism undergraduates. It tallies points earned by each school's students throughout the year to determine the winners.

University of Kansas won first in the writing contest, followed by Northwestern University and the University of Missouri. Fourth place went to Penn State University, fifth to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, sixth to the University of Oregon, and seventh to the University of Montana. Behind the UI were Indiana University in ninth place, and Louisiana State University in 10th.
