Ambulatory Surgery Center celebrates first anniversary

The Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is marking its first anniversary March 26.

ASC Director Douglas Merrill, M.D., said the 45,000 square-foot facility features six operating rooms and the services of 90 surgeons and anesthesiologists. The ASC staff exceeded projections by performing 5,174 procedures during the first nine-and-a-half months of operation, most involving specialists in ophthalmology, orthopedics and otolaryngology.

Expansion efforts are already underway. Two more operating rooms will open in the coming months. A renovation of all lighting in the operating rooms will also make the ASC a showcase of the cutting edge of clarity and shadow-less vision. Jessica Gillespie, M.D., now offers a new, full-service plastic surgery/cosmetics service. Erin O'Brien, M.D., will join the ASC team this summer and will enhance the available services of the already world-leading ear, nose and throat department, specifically adding more capabilities in sinus endoscopy procedures.

Both surgery efficiency and satisfaction among surgical patients has been remarkable, and the ASC patient outcomes and safety records are excellent. Over 99 percent of patients are on record as saying that they would recommend the ASC to family members or friends considering elective surgery. Despite their success, the ASC staff is spearheading several nationally recognized programs to improve all aspects of patient care in the ambulatory surgery center setting.
