Johnson brings 'Put Your Life on a Diet' to 'Live from Prairie Lights' July 11

WSUI's "Live from Prairie Lights" will feature University of Iowa alumnus and Iowa City activist Gregory Johnson reading from "Put Your Life on a Diet: Lessons Learned from Living in 140 Square Feet," 7 p.m. Friday, July 11, in the Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City. Listen live via the University of Iowa Writing University Web site at http://www.writinguniversity.org or writinguniversity.uiowa.edu.

The event -- the official launch of the new book -- will be recorded for broadcast on Iowa Public Radio's "Live from Prairie Lights" series. Hour-long "Live from Prairie Lights" productions, hosted by WSUI's Julie Englander, air at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Saturdays, and 7 p.m. Sundays on WSUI-AM 910 in Iowa City and WOI-AM 640 in Ames.

In "Put Your Life on a Diet" Johnson addresses five issues -- housing, food, technology, utilities and transportation -- revealing ways that people can create a simpler life while reducing stress and causing less harm to the environment.

Johnson is the founder and director of Resources for Life, an outreach and public interest organization based in Iowa City. As a technology consultant, he works for the UI as well as clients served by his consulting firm, the Technology Services Resource Group.

During his time as a computer support provider at the UI College of Law, Johnson offered computer courses to students using course materials he developed. For several years in the early 1990s, he regularly taught courses in computing offered by Kirkwood Community College. From 2006 to 2007 he offered free courses to the public at the Iowa City Public Library and now provides individualized instruction and support for computer users at the UI.

His home, the Mobile Hermitage, has received national media attention. The Mobile Hermitage is a low energy small home that was designed and built by Jay Shafer of the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company.
