Recreational Services offers Colorado backpacking service trip July 19-27
The Touch the Earth program at the University of Iowa Division of Recreational Services will offer a backpacking service trip to Colorado this summer.
The trip, which will take place Saturday, July 19 through Sunday, July 27, will include whitewater rafting on the Arkansas River and hiking up 14,420-foot Mt. Harvard. During the trip, the service group will work on trail maintenance, vegetation restoration and repairing damage caused by visitors.
The Touch the Earth program has adopted Mt. Harvard through the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative. Each year, about a half million people climb Colorado's Fourteeners, a group of peaks over 14,000 feet, resulting in an urgent need for trail maintenance and restoration of impacted areas. The UI is the first organization outside of Colorado to adopt one of the peaks.
The trip cost is $595 and includes equipment rental, transportation, leadership, camping fee and permit fees, and most meals. Space is limited to eight to ten participants and is open to UI students, faculty, staff, and the public. Registration deadline is Monday, June 30.
