Johnston returns for WSUI's 'Live from Prairie Lights' July 24

Fiction writer Bret Anthony Johnston, a graduate of the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop and a faculty member in the 2008 Iowa Summer Writing Festival, will read from and discuss his new interactive book, "Naming The World: Exercises for the Creative Writer," at 7 pm. Thursday, July 24, in Prairie Lights Books at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City. This WSUI "Live from Prairie Lights" event, hosted by Julie Englander, is free and open to the public.

The event will be recorded for broadcast on Iowa Public Radio's "Live from Prairie Lights" series. Hour-long "Live from Prairie Lights" productions air at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Saturdays, and 7 p.m. Sundays on WSUI-AM 910 in Iowa City and WOI-AM 640 in Ames. Johnson, the author of the stunning short-story collection "Corpus Christi," includes entries from 65 writers, including Joyce Carol Oates, Dorothy Allison and Tom Robbins.

Writers' Workshop faculty member Ethan Canin calls "Naming the World," "A highly useful and perceptive book. With charm and intelligence it touches on nearly every teachable aspect of the devilishly difficult art of writing."

Johnston's work has been widely published, including in The Paris Review, The New York Times Magazine and Tin House. In 2006 he received a National Book Award for emerging writers. He is the director of creative writing at Harvard University. For more information, visit
