UI WiderNet Project expands with help of HP donation
The University of Iowa's WiderNet Project will further develop its eGranary Digital Library, an off-line digital resource that delivers millions of educational documents to developing countries where Web access is minimal and expensive, with the help of a new high-capacity server donated by HP.
The WiderNet Project, based at the UI School of Library and Information Science, is a UI service organization dedicated to improving digital communications in developing countries. Over 200 schools, clinics and libraries across Africa already have the eGranary Digital Library -- "The Internet in a Box(tm)."
With the new $7,000 server, the digital library can grow from its current 10 million resources to about 30 million resources, said WiderNet Director Cliff Missen. HP officials said the company is proud to support the project and its mission to help more people in more countries join the global digital community.
