UI ranked No. 1 in federal dental research funding for fiscal year 2007

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has listed the University of Iowa as first in NIDCR funding for its 2007 fiscal year with a grant total of more than $12 million.

The listing is available online at

This amount represents grant recipients from across the entire campus, noted David Johnsen, D.D.S., dean of the UI College of Dentistry. "This achievement reflects the creativity, hard work and, perhaps most important, the collaborative spirit of this university," he said. "The scientists and research administrators around the university made this happen."

The College of Dentistry has maintained a strong track record of research collaboration across campus, Johnsen said, noting that the college was the first dental school in the country to establish an oral research component with its institution's clinical research center -- in this case, the UI Carver College of Medicine-based General Clinical Research Center. He added that the dental college also is a key partner in the UI Institute for Clinical and Translational Science, which was established last year.

One key collaborator has been Jeffrey Murray, M.D., professor of pediatrics in the UI Carver College of Medicine, who received more than $5.6 million in NIDCR fiscal year 2007 funding in for several projects, including a craniofacial anomalies research center and studies focusing on the genetics and epidemiology of cleft lip and palate.
