MEDIA ADVISORY: December commencement coverage; Voxman to receive honorary degree


The University of Iowa will hold December commencement ceremonies Saturday, Dec. 20. Himie Voxman, clarinet legend and former UI School of Music director, will be conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) ceremony at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20. Voxman, after whom Voxman Music Building is named, succeeded P.G. Clapp as director of the School of Music in 1954, serving in this capacity until 1980.

Below are guidelines designed to assist members of the news media while respecting the needs of graduates and their families:

Carver Hawkeye Arena (Ceremonies will be held for undergraduates from the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), Tippie College of Business, College of Nursing, College of Education and Carver College of Medicine at 9 a.m.)

The Graduate College ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, also at Carver Hawkeye Arena.

--You may park in any of the surrounding lots for the CLAS and Graduate College ceremonies: Lots 33, 40, 43, 65 or 75. For a link to a downloadable PDF of UI Parking Lots, go to

--Doors open at 8 a.m. for the CLAS commencement, and photographers will be allowed on the arena floor until five minutes before graduates begin the processional. (In other words, no later than 8:55 a.m.) Doors open at 1 p.m. for the Graduate College ceremony, and photographers will also be allowed on the arena floor until five minutes before graduates begin the processional, no later than 1:55 p.m.

--Full arena lighting will be used, so additional lights should not be necessary. Flashes and tripods are permitted. Cords may not lie on the floor in areas of any foot traffic.

--Photographers can take pictures from the top of the arena or from the aisles in the audience, but no one except students and commencement marshals will be allowed on the floor during the ceremony.

--Clean audio is available through the arena system.

The College of Law will hold a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at the Boyd Law Building.

The College of Engineering will hold its ceremony at noon Saturday, Dec. 20, at MacBride Hall Auditorium.
