Tippie College to lead top study abroad program for business students

The University of Iowa's Tippie College of Business is now the new home for one of the world's leading study abroad programs for business students.

As a result, UI students will have more opportunities to study at the Consortium Institute for Management and Business Analysis (CIMBA), the Italian campus of the Consortium of Universities for International Studies. Some of the country's top business students will be associated with the University of Iowa for the semester they're enrolled in the institution.

"Today's business students must have an international background to be successful after they graduate and start their careers, and this program offers a focused curriculum for students who want to become international business leaders," said Gary Gaeth, a professor of marketing in the Tippie College of Business who will oversee the program's faculty development. "At the same time, it will increase the University of Iowa's visibility as an outstanding provider of international business education."

The consortium, made up of 33 U.S. universities, works with CIMBA to deliver programs in Paderno del Grappa (photo, above left) and Asolo, Italy, adjacent villages north of Venice. Gaeth said consortium members actively encourage students and faculty to seek international academic experiences that emphasize the importance of developing an understanding and appreciation of diversity in culture and perspective. In addition, the focus on leadership works from a foundation of personal development and includes in depth individual coaching.

The UI became the credit- and degree-granting institution as of Aug. 1. The consortium was most recently administered by the University of Kansas.

The consortium includes both an undergraduate and M.B.A. curriculum, which, combined with the Tippie School of Management's existing program in Hong Kong, gives Tippie management students opportunities to study in both Asia and Europe.

"Our new capacity offers Iowa the chance to greatly increase its study abroad programming and provides intriguing opportunities for collaborations that can enhance the leadership components of our domestic MBA and undergraduate programs," said Curt Hunter, dean of the Tippie College of Business. "We are delighted that we have the opportunity to broaden the global footprint of the Tippie College of Business and the University of Iowa."

The faculty at the campus is made up largely of faculty from the member universities who teach for a semester or a year in Italy. They teach a rigorous curriculum that includes not only academics but a significant component on leadership development.

"The program attracts some of the top undergraduate business students in the country," said Mary Spreen, the new director for the consortium programs at Iowa. "They're very goal oriented and academically focused."

She said the program is so prestigious that some students attended the University of Kansas because the program had been based there. All students who participate in the program will be considered Iowa alumni, since they were enrolled at UI during their time abroad.

In addition to its business courses, CIMBA offers study abroad opportunities in other disciplines. Programs in music, communications and journalism will provide opportunities for students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), and the Belin Blank Center in the College of Education will oversee a training and coaching program.

Gaeth said numerous departments and colleges throughout the university helped to bring CIMBA to UI, including CLAS, the College of Education, President's Office, and Provost's Office of International Programs.
