Andre Dubus III reads as a guest of the Iowa Writers' Workshop Dec. 5

Fiction writer Andre Dubus III, a guest of the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, will present a free reading at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, in the Frank Conroy Reading Room of the UI Dey House.

Dubus is best known for the novel "House of Sand and Fog," which was a finalist for the National Book Award, was chosen for Oprah Winfrey's book club, and was adapted into a feature film. His other works include the short-story collection "The Cage Keeper" and the novels "Bluesman" and "The Garden of Last Days." His work was included in "Best American Essays 1994.

His awards include a Pushcart Prize and the National Magazine Award for Fiction.

He is the son of the late Andre Dubus, the acclaimed short-story writer and essayist who held a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Writers' Workshop.

"Like most kids, I didn't pay attention to what my dad did," he says. "I just wasn't interested ... I wasn't really aware that he was a writer; I didn't start reading his writing until I was about 15. It occurred to me then that my dad was kind of special; he's still one of my favorite writers."
