UI Graduate College honors Grassian, Schmidt, Lovaglia for mentoring

University of Iowa faculty members Vicki Grassian, Frank Schmidt and Michael Lovaglia will be honored at a reception today for their exemplary work as mentors for graduate students.

"The Graduate College sees mentors as a crucial ingredient of education," said Graduate College Dean John Keller. "We recognize UI faculty's significant efforts to assist with all aspects of graduate scholars' research, dissertation, professional development and job placement. These efforts demonstrate a commitment to helping graduate students succeed in school and in their careers.

The 2008 Outstanding Mentor Awards will be presented to Grassian (photo, left), professor of chemistry in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Schmidt (photo, right), professor of management and organizations in the Tippie College of Business. The awards carry a $2,500 prize.

Lovaglia (photo, bottom), a professor of sociology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will receive a Special Recognition Award for Mentoring.

Schmidt starts students on research early, during their first year, to promote rapid, hands-on learning. Grassian strives to be available, expect and demonstrate excellence and set high expectations for her mentees while providing as many professional development opportunities as possible. Lovaglia credits students for his own professional success, noting that collaboration with graduate students makes his research possible.

This year's awards recognize faculty in social sciences and in mathematical and physical sciences and engineering. In alternate years the awards are presented to faculty in humanities and fine arts and in biological and life sciences.
