Winokur appointed associate dean at UI Carver College of Medicine

Pat Winokur, M.D., associate professor of internal medicine, has been named associate dean for clinical and translational science at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. The appointment was effective Nov. 1.

Winokur replaces Gary Hunninghake, M.D., who is stepping down from the position to concentrate on his roles as principal investigator of the UI's Clinical and Translational Science Award and director of the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science. Winokur will work closely with Hunninghake on clinical and translational medicine objectives.

Winokur is also an infectious disease specialist with UI Hospitals and Clinics and associate chief of staff for research at the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Her research focuses on studying the molecular basis of antibiotic resistance, creating a model for Hemophilus influenzae that can be used to study vaccines in early development, and leading a number of vaccine trials, most recently targeting influenza, bird flu and smallpox. Winokur is UI principal investigator for a seven-year, $23.7 million National Institutes of Health contract to conduct clinical trials of promising vaccines and therapies for infectious diseases.

"Dr. Winokur has expertise in basic science research and clinical studies, including a successful track-record of working with study participants and obtaining high-quality data," said Paul Rothman, M.D., dean of the UI Carver College of Medicine. "I'm pleased that she has accepted the leadership position and will help us fulfill our clinical and translational science goals."

Winokur has been a UI faculty member since 1993. She earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Brown University and a medical degree from Washington University. Winokur completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in infectious diseases at the UI.
