UI researcher receives $255,762 NSF grant for undergraduate nanoscience research
A University of Iowa researcher has received a $255,762 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant for undergraduate nanoscience and nanotechnology research.
Sarah Larsen, associate professor of chemistry in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and grant project director, said that the NSF funding, formally known as a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) grant, will provide between eight and 10 summer research positions for undergraduate students interested in studying nanoscience and nanotechnology.
"Through this REU program, which is co-sponsored by the Division of Chemistry and the Engineering Education Centers at NSF, undergraduate students will have a unique opportunity to participate in exciting, interdisciplinary research being conducted by faculty affiliated with the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Institute at the UI. Applications are currently being accepted and we hope to recruit a diverse group of undergraduate students for the program," she said.
Larsen, who also serves as associate director of the UI Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Institute, noted that the grant was received through the UI institute, a fact that will further promote institute research goals in health and the environment.
Vicki Grassian, institute director, professor of chemistry, and professor of chemical and biochemical engineering in the UI College of Engineering, underscored the benefit to undergraduate students.
"With the NSF award, the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Institute at the UI will support undergraduate students in research on environmental and health aspects of nanoscience and nanotechnology. This is a wonderful way to engage undergraduate students in cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research," said Grassian.
The program itself, which will run from May 27 through Aug. 1, is designed to provide junior or senior undergraduate students a measure of research experience in cutting-edge topics related to environmental and health aspects of nanoscience and nanotechnology. REU participants will have the opportunity to work with faculty mentors from the departments of chemical and biochemical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, chemistry, pharmacy, and occupational and environmental health.
