Axis Theatre's 'The Number 14' will take Hancher families on wild ride

Vancouver's physical-comedy Axis Theatre Company will perform "The Number 14," a silly and satirical urban bus ride filled with music, quirky characters, masks and slapstick, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24 in the University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium.

The New York Daily News described this wild family event as ""Delightful . . . dazzling . . . brilliant . . . astounding! This bus ride is so exhilarating that you don't really care where you get off."

The rollicking ode to bus travel has become an international hit since its creation in 1992, and this is the show's 15th year on tour. It is a tour-de-force of the Axis Theatre company's unique performance style, which combines mime, dance, clowning, puppetry and acrobatics.

"The Number 14" is a series of comedic skits featuring only six actors who don masks to bring 60 characters to life, enlarging the personalities of those we may meet while using public transportation.

In its three-decades of existence, the Axis Theatre Company has created nearly 50 original works, winning 14 Jessie Richardson Awards from the Vancouver theater community and a Drama Desk nomination in New York. The company has toured to 13 countries on four continents.

"The Number 14" is supported by Carl and Julie Schweser, the University of Iowa Community Credit Union, and Herbert A. and Janice A. Wilson through the University of Iowa Foundation.

Tickets are $24/22/20; UI student $21.60/15; senior citizen $21.60/19.80/18; youth $16.80/15.40/14.
