College of Dentistry appoints Stanford associate dean for research
Clark Stanford, D.D.S., Ph.D., professor of prosthodontics in the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, has been appointed the college's associate dean for research, effective Jan. 1.
He succeeds Christopher Squier, Ph.D., D.Sc., who has served as associate dean since 1985. Squier will remain on the faculty and serve as director of graduate studies in the college.
"Without question, Dr. Stanford has had an outstanding career in dental research that makes him ideally suited for this key role in the college," said David Johnsen, D.D.S., dean of the College of Dentistry. "Clark also brings tremendous administrative and leadership skills that serve him well in working with our faculty and students. He's a great asset for the college and the University of Iowa."
Stanford's research focuses on the structure and efficacy of dental implants, as well as the materials used in dental prostheses such as implants, dentures and crowns. He also is interested in bone biology, including biologically mediated bone mineralization, bone metabolism, osteoblasts (cells that make bone) and the isolation and characterization of human osteogenic cells.
Stanford also teaches College of Dentistry students and graduate students, and he treats patients at the College, with an emphasis in implant dentistry.
Stanford received a bachelor's degree in 1984 and a doctorate of dental surgery in 1987 at the UI. He also earned a certificate in prosthodontics and a doctorate in biology at the UI in 1992. A UI faculty member since 1992, Stanford also holds academic appointments in the Hospital Dentistry Institute at UI Hospitals and Clinics, in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation in the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and in the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the UI College of Engineering.
In 2000, he was named the College of Dentistry's Centennial Fund Professor of Clinical Research. Stanford has been director of the college's Office for Clinical Research since 2002.
