Nonprofit Resource Center sponsors nonprofit law program

The University of Iowa College of Law and the Larned A. Waterman Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center will host a nonprofit law program Sept. 5-6, at the Coralville Marriott. The guest speaker is Theresa Pattara, tax counsel to Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, the ranking minority member of the Senate Finance Committee, who advises Grassley on tax matters relating to exempt organizations. Other presenters include Eric Tabor, chief of staff at the Iowa Attorney General's Office. College of Law professors will also give presentations, and Emeritus Professor Willard L. Boyd will discuss nonprofit governance.

12th annual 98.1 KHAK Radiothon another success

The 12th annual 98.1 KHAK Radiothon benefiting University of Iowa Children's Hospital through Children's Miracle Network Aug. 19-22 raised $182,233.65 for patients and families.

The 98.1 KHAK morning team of the Brain and Steele hosted the broadcast from the John Colloton Pavilion Atrium lobby on the first level of UI Hospitals and Clinics. The team shared the stories of patients and their families cared for at UI Children's Hospital.

In the previous 11 years, the KHAK Radiothon has raised over $1 million for UI Children's Hospital.

Grant will help train orthopedics residents to care for older adults

Neil Segal, M.D., assistant professor of orthopaedics and rehabilitation in the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, has received a two-year, $40,000 grant from the Geriatrics Education for Specialty Residents (GSR) Program, a component of the American Geriatrics Society/Hartford Foundation-funded Geriatrics-for-Specialists Initiative.

The grant will support better integration of geriatrics into the residency training of orthopedic surgeons at the UI.

Paul Mulhausen, M.D., UI associate professor of internal medicine and director of the Iowa Geriatric Education Center, is co-principal investigator on the grant.

The GSR program aims to help prepare surgeons and other medical specialists to provide health care tailored to the unique needs of older adults.

UI Swing Dance Club hosts Welcome Dance Sept. 5

The University of Iowa Swing Dance Club invites students and the Iowa City community to kick off the school year with live music, free dance lessons and social swing dancing at this year's Welcome Swing Dance, Friday Sept. 5 at the Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center, 220 S. Gilbert St. in Iowa City.

The dance begins at 7 p.m. with a free, hour-long beginner's lesson taught by members of the UI Flying Lindy Hawks, the UI Swing Dance Club's competitive team. At 8 p.m., Mutiny in the Parlor, a local jazz band, will play dance tunes. Admission is free for everyone.

The University of Iowa Swing Dance Club is a student organization that offers classes, workshops and social dances to its members and the Iowa City community.

Brian Joens to perform on 'Java Blend' Sept. 5

Americana and acoustic folk rock artist Brian Joens will perform live as part of the Iowa Public Radio performance series Java Blend from noon until 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, at the Java House in downtown Iowa City.

A Des Moines-based singer-songwriter, Joens, has toured the Midwest and created seven CDs over the past 15 years. His latest release is "Quarter Moon View."

The free show originates from WSUI-AM 910 at the University of Iowa and will be recorded for broadcast Saturday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 21, across the state on Iowa Public Radio.
