Suls appointed chair of NIH panel on behavioral medicine

Jerry Suls, professor of psychology in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was named chair of an expert panel that reviews and makes recommendations on the scientific merits and innovation of research grants submitted to the National Institutes of Health for funding.

Suls will chair the Behavioral Medicine Interventions and Outcomes Study Section of the NIH's Center for Scientific Review through 2009. The panel includes about three dozen behavioral and biomedical scientists who review 80 to 90 proposals three times per year at meetings in Washington, D.C. Suls has served as a member of the review panel since 2004.

This particular panel evaluates projects concerning behavioral and social interventions for physical health problems such as heart disease, cancer and chronic pain. The panelists are chosen from a wide range of fields, including psychology, psychiatry, cardiology, internal medicine, nursing, medical sociology and epidemiology.

"Grant review is important because new research leads to advances in understanding, in this case, how psychological and biomedical researchers can collaborate to improve physical health and well-being." Suls said. "I'm honored to serve in this role."

Suls joined the UI faculty in 1990. He teaches courses on health psychology and social psychology. His research focuses on psychological risk factors for heart disease, cardiac rehabilitation, and the role of social norms in health-promoting and health-damaging behaviors. Suls earned his doctorate in social psychology from Temple University in 1973.
