Total enrollment up at UI for 2007 fall semester

Enrollment at the University of Iowa for the 2007 fall semester totals a record 30,409 students, up 430 (1.4 percent) from 29,979 for the fall of 2006, according to the UI Office of the Registrar. The entering class also includes a record number of honors students and is more diverse than last year's class.

The number of new freshmen in 2007 totals 4,287, the second largest first-year class in history, almost equal to the record of 4,289 set in 2006. Total undergraduate enrollment stands at 20,908, up 170 students from 2006.

"I'm very glad to see that students and their families continue to recognize the value of a University of Iowa education," said UI Interim Provost Lola Lopes. "I'm also proud that our faculty and staff continue to respond quickly and do all they need to do to accommodate our growing numbers."

Tom Rocklin, senior associate provost for undergraduate education, notes that the entering class includes 735 honors students, or about 17 percent of the class. This is a new record, surpassing the previous record of 642 honors students (15 percent of the entering class) in fall 2006.

"This incoming class is well prepared to benefit from, and contribute to, the outstanding learning environment at Iowa," Rocklin said.

Marcella David, special assistant to the president for equal opportunity and diversity and associate provost for diversity, also commented on how the new class will contribute to the learning environment for all students. The number of minority students among new undergraduates (first year and transfer students) grew by 8.2 percent as compared to fall 2006. The number of new international undergraduate students grew by 17.5 percent.

"I'm so pleased that our focused efforts to create a diverse student body are meeting with success because we know the benefits that come with learning in a more diverse setting," David said.

Of the 5,820 freshmen and undergraduate transfers, 2,323 (about 40 percent) are nonresidents.
