Women's Safety Forum planned Sept. 12

The University of Iowa Student Government (UISG) will sponsor a Women's Safety Forum at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the Second Floor Ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union.

The forum, which is presented in response to the recent reports of sexual assaults in the Iowa City area, will be free and open to the public.

UI President Sally Mason will speak at the forum. After her remarks, campus and community organizations will provide information on the following topics: sexual assaults by strangers, presented by the UI Rape Victim Advocacy Program; self-defense, presented by the UI Department of Public Safety; dating violence, presented by the Domestic Violence Intervention Program; and alcohol and date-rape drugs, presented by UI Student Health.

Reported sexual assaults have drastically increased in the Iowa City community over the past year. According to the UI Department of Public Safety's Website, there were 11 sexual assaults in 2003, nine in 2004, and five in 2005. However, local media has reported that since Sept. 1, 2006, there have been 31 sexual assaults in Iowa City.

"We're encouraging women to attend this forum and learn how to protect themselves and men to attend to be part of the solution," said Carole Peterson, UISG vice president.
