Hawk Watch 2007 set for Sept. 15 at Macbride Nature Recreation Area

As part of the annual Hawk Watch, the public is invited to the University of Iowa's Macbride Nature Recreation (MNRA) Area on Saturday, Sept. 15 to celebrate the fall migration of raptors, waterfowl and songbirds.

The Hawk Watch program is from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the MNRA, located between Solon and North Liberty on County Road F28. The MNRA staff has several educational activities planned for the entire family:

-- At 9 a.m. a Macbride Raptor Project (MPP) staff member will conduct a Hawk Identification Seminar.

-- At 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. a MRP staff member will present a Live Raptor Program.

-- Songbird banding will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. by Meredith Caskey, assistant coordinator of the UI Wildlife Camp and School of the Wild.

-- From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. the Iowa City Bird Club members will conduct hawk watching on the ridge of Stainbrook State Preserve, next to the Sugar Bottom Entrance. Please bring binoculars, blankets, lawn chairs and picnic lunches for an exciting day of autumn migration and scenery.

The sponsors of the Hawk Watch include the Macbride Raptor Project (a joint program of the UI Division of Recreational Services and Kirkwood Community College), the Iowa City Bird Club, Cornell College Biology Department and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The Macbride Raptor Project, founded in 1985, is devoted to preserving Iowa's birds of prey and their natural habitats. The project achieves its goals through rehabilitation of sick and injured birds, educational programs for the public and field research of Iowa's native raptors.
