Fans asked to help make Hawks first in respect and safety

University of Iowa President Sally Mason and Head Football Coach Kirk Ferentz are asking Hawkeye fans to cooperate in safety guidelines and to be respectful of all fans and athletes this season.

"We're excited about starting a new season with a really promising team," Ferentz said. "I'd like to see Hawkeye fans welcome our opponents with the same respect and admiration that they give the Hawkeyes. I'm not saying they should cheer for the opposition, but don't disrespect athletes or fans no matter what colors they are wearing. Make a home game in Kinnick Stadium an experience that both Hawkeyes and their opponents can remember with pride and pleasure."

"I know that Hawkeyes are among the most loyal and devoted fans anywhere," Mason said. "The enthusiasm and respect they show the university and its athletic teams is well known. We're asking that fans demonstrate the same respect for visiting athletes and fans of opposing teams and for the private property of the people living in the Kinnick neighborhood and Iowa City area."

Ferentz and Mason remind fans to observe the Big Ten Conference Fans' Creed: "Wear school colors with pride; cheer at the top of your lungs; sing our school song off-key; respect conference traditions; support our team, win or lose; and treat our visitors with respect."
