The Gilded Bats, Pieta Brown to perform on 'Java Blend' Nov. 2, 9

As part of the Iowa Public Radio performance series "Java Blend" the Gilded Bats will perform live at noon Friday, Nov. 2 and Pieta Brown will play at noon Friday, Nov. 9 at the Java House, 211 E. Washington St. in downtown Iowa City.

The public is invited to be part of the live audiences for the hour-long shows, which originate from the University of Iowa's radio station WSUI-AM 910.

The Gilded Bats, who call themselves an "old-time stringband," include Eastern Iowa natives Norbert Sarsfield on the fiddle, banjoist Andrew Epstein, guitarist Bill Bryant and bass-player Chris Clark. The Gilded Bats self-titled debut CD, funded in part by a grant from the Iowa Arts Council, was released in October. The group's performance will be broadcast on Iowa Public Radio Saturday, Nov. 17 and Sunday, Nov. 18.

Iowa native Brown combines a sound of "southern gothic" and "heartland hip" into her songs. Influenced by her folk singer father, Greg Brown, and traditional and rural folk music, the singer-songwriter's latest album, "Remember the Sun," conveys Brown's personal history. The "Java Blend" performance will be broadcast on Iowa Public Radio Saturday, Nov. 24 and Sunday, Nov. 25.

"Java Blend" broadcast times on WSUI-AM 910 are 7 p.m. Saturdays and 5 p.m. Sundays; check local broadcast times for other Iowa Public Radio stations. To view a full calendar of upcoming "Java Blend" performances and broadcasts, visit and scroll to "Java Blend."

Hosted by Ben Kieffer, "Java Blend" offers an eclectic mix of live music from the vibrant independent music scene featuring artists from around the state and country. Kieffer infuses the performances with lively discussions about the artists' music and lives.

"Java Blend" is videotaped for several TV broadcasts on the UITV cable channel in the Iowa City and Cedar Rapids area. The audio version can be heard worldwide on the Internet via Iowa Public Radio stations' live Webcasting.
