UI student to share immigration experiences at Lincoln Elementary Oct. 29

Students at Lincoln Elementary School in Iowa City will have the opportunity to enhance what they are learning in the classroom on Monday, Oct. 29. The school's fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade language arts classes will visit with Maya George, a University of Iowa graduate student in pharmaceutics who is originally from India, through the UI International Programs' International Classroom Journey (ICJ).

The presentation will take place from 12:10 to 1:10 p.m. for teacher Lindsey Eschol's language arts classes. The class is studying historical immigration.

Having recently moved to the United States, George will share with the class her experiences so far, what she misses about her homeland, and the cultural differences between India and the United States. ICJ seeks to internationalize the K-12 curriculum in eastern Iowa.

The ICJ, which is sponsored by UI International Programs, arranges for guest speakers to visit K-12 classrooms and community groups to promote cultural awareness and knowledge of other countries. These guest speakers are trained international students and scholars and U.S. students who have spent time abroad.
