Risk-taking Zagreb Saxophone Quartet will play at UI Nov. 1

The Zagreb Saxophone Quartet will present a guest recital at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in Harper Hall of the University of Iowa Voxman Music Building.

The performance will be free and open to the public.

A German critic wrote, "The Zagreb Saxophone Quartet offered a memorable and daring concert . . . the interpreters have deserved great recognition for their effort and willingness to take risks," and a critic in Ljubljana, Slovenia, reported, "The sound palette of the Zagreb Saxophone Quartet is extremely rich, marked by pure and beautiful shades."

The members of the Zagreb Saxophone Quartet -- Dragan Sremec, soprano and alto saxophone; Goran Mercep, alto saxophone; Sasha Nestorovic, tenor saxophone; and Matjaz Drevenshek, baritone saxophone -- are graduates of the Zagreb Academy of Music.

They have performed with numerous European orchestras and have performed widely on the summer festival circuit. Leading saxophonists have performed with the Zagreb Quartet, including UI Distinguished Alumnus Eugene Rousseau and former UI faculty member Matthew Sintchack.
