ADVISORY UPDATE: UI Recreation, Wellness Center groundbreaking moved to North Gym

WHAT: Groundbreaking at the site of the University of Iowa Campus Recreation and Wellness Center

WHEN: 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19

WHERE: North Gym in the Field House. Parking is available in a metered ramp and lot adjacent to the Field House. (For directions/assistance, contact Kerry DuBay at 319-335-9293.) Please note that this is a new location. The event was originally scheduled to take place at the intersection of Burlington and Madison streets.

WHO: Scheduled order of speakers:

  • Harry Ostrander, director of Recreational Services
  • Sally Mason, president of the University of Iowa
  • Robert Downer, Board of Regents, State of Iowa
  • Gary Barta, director of Athletics
  • Ashley Dell, co-captain of the UI women's swimming and diving team
  • Phillip Jones, vice president for student services and dean of students
  • Barrett Anderson, president of University of Iowa Student Government

PROJECT DETAILS: The UI is set to begin construction on the $69 million Campus Recreation and Wellness Center that was approved by the Board of Regents in September 2006. The facility was designed by RDG Planning and Design and is set to be completed by December 2009. Program areas will include a 50-meter stretch competitive swimming pool with separate diving well and diving tower, a leisure swimming pool, 20,000 square feet of fitness space for cardio machines and weight equipment, a 54-foot high climbing tower with separate bouldering area, three gymnasiums/multipurpose courts, three multipurpose rooms, a 1/9 mile suspended jogging track, locker rooms, a café and several lounge areas. The facility will house Recreational Services, the men's and women's varsity swimming and diving teams, and will include a shared suite for Campus Wellness Programs, which originate from UI Wellness, Health Iowa, Student Health Services and Recreational Services.
