University Theatres Gallery series presents Undergraduate Directors Festival

The University Theatres Gallery series will present an Undergraduate Directors Festival at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 through Saturday, Oct. 20 in Theater B of the University of Iowa Theatre Building.

The work of undergraduate directing students Cara Clonch, Joseph Thomas and Abby Reiter will be featured.

Clonch is the director of "The Philadelphia" by David Ives and "Throwing Your Voice" by Craig Lucas.

In "The Philadelphia," a young man finds himself in a Twilight-Zone-like state in which he cannot get anything he requests. The only solution is to ask for the opposite of what he really wants.

"Throwing Your Voice" portrays two young couples arguing about moral responsibility for the South African diamond and ivory trade.

Thomas describes the play he is directing, "Playing" by student playwright Cecilia Copeland: "Donny and Dana are two people trying to find the next move in their relationship. Should they move forward and end up taking each other out, or should they sit still and wait? If two people make it out of this game, it is all over then? This piece is a UI debut, for a mature audience."

Reiter is directing Wendy Wasserstein's father/daughter story "Tender Offer."

Other artistic contributors to the festival include scene designer Cheyanne Boddicker, sound designer Joe Luis Cedillo and lighting designer Eli Wilkinson.

Admission is $6 ($4 for UI students) at the door.

The Department of Theatre Arts is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
