UI Hospitals and Clinics responds to survey report

University of Iowa Health Care leaders announced today that they have submitted a preliminary response to the report on the results of a full survey of UI Hospitals and Clinics and are currently discussing revisions to its response with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) regional office in Kansas City, Mo.

The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals (IDIA) conducted the review at the request of CMS. The IDIA survey team concluded its onsite review on Aug. 17. The IDIA then submitted a report of its findings to CMS. UI Hospitals and Clinics officials received a copy of the IDIA report and a cover letter from CMS on Sept. 11.

The report from IDIA detailed deficiencies with three Conditions of Participation that involve patient rights, physical environment and infection control concerns related to the acute dialysis program. Hospital staff made corrective steps while the surveyors were still on site and successfully resolved their concerns.

As is typically the case with all such surveys, there were also many other opportunities for improvement noted. Hospital staff prepared an extensive preliminary response to the report that details multiple solutions to the concerns identified by the surveyors. That response was sent to IDIA and CMS on Sept. 21, and hospital staff are currently discussing revisions to the corrective plan.

Following approval of the corrective plan, CMS will direct IDIA to make an unannounced return visit to verify implementation of the corrective actions. That visit will likely occur in mid-October.
