UI students to join in multicultural event at Prairie Heights Elementary

Students of Prairie Heights Elementary School in Cedar Rapids and their families will have an opportunity to learn about other cultures on Thursday, Nov. 29.

The school is hosting a multicultural event open to all elementary students and their parents for the first time. The open house will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at Prairie Heights Elementary, 401 76th Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids. University of Iowa students -- both international students and those who have studied abroad -- will represent different countries and answer questions. The UI students are participating through the International Programs' International Classroom Journey (ICJ).

The following seven UI students will participate in the open house: Meike ten Cate, an undergraduate student from Germany; Makenzie Kaiser, a UI alumna who studied abroad in Germany; Sangdon Lee, a graduate student from Korea; Manasi Ramachandran, a graduate student from India; Naa Adjeiwa Tackie, an undergraduate student from Ghana; Mei Ling Lee, a UI alumna from Malaysia; and Yi Yang, a graduate student from China.

The ICJ, which is sponsored by UI International Programs, arranges for guest speakers to visit K-12 classrooms and community groups to promote cultural awareness and knowledge of other countries. These guest speakers are trained international students and scholars and U.S. students who have spent time abroad.
