Bovine prints to support 'Tippie Cowlege of Business'

Buy a cow, support the Tippie College of Business.

Iowa artist Valerie Miller, a 2003 marketing graduate of the University of Iowa's business school, is donating a portion of the sale price of 5,000 limited edition Mini Moo prints to the Tippie College.

"I wanted to create a way to give something back to the University of Iowa and the Tippie College of Business, as an example for others to follow as a young female business owner and Tippie College of Business alumna," said Miller, who owns Steel Cow Gallery in Waukon. "The University of Iowa gave me so much, and I wanted to return something."

Miller uses the cow as her primary artistic motif, painting individual bovines in acrylic paint, set against brightly colored backgrounds to show the character of each cow isolated from the herd. Mini Moos are small, seven-square inch framed prints of the larger cow paintings that sell at her Steel Cow Gallery and at galleries across the country.

The cow pictured in the Tippie prints is named Tippie for the college and its benefactor, Henry B. Tippie. Miller said she found Tippie the Cow in a herd near Waukon.

"I was walking through the pasture looking for a cow to name Tippie for this project, and every time I lifted my camera to shoot photos of them, this one cow moved in front of me so that she was always in the frame," Miller said. "I took that to mean she wanted to be named Tippie."

Curt Hunter, dean of the Tippie College, said a Tippie Cow makes sense.

"Considering that Henry Tippie grew up on an Iowa dairy farm, it seems appropriate we have this opportunity to strengthen the college by selling cows," said Hunter.

The Mini Moo prints will sell for $39 (art paper print) and $59 (canvas print), with 50 percent of the price donated to the Tippie College. For more information, visit the Steel Cow Gallery online at, or call 1-866-670-2477.
