UI Museum of Art offers final 'View and DO' event of 2007 Dec. 1

The University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) will host "View and DO: A Family Art Activity," its final family-centered event of 2007, frim 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1.

"View and DO" programs, designed for child-adult teams, use current UIMA exhibitions as a jumping off point for reflection about composition and form, art history movements and approaches to art. Each session starts with an introduction to a selection of artworks in the UIMA. Afterwards, participants will do a hands-on arts activity for kids and adults based on the artworks viewed.

The Dec. 1 session will include an exploration of the design concepts behind Cubism. The young artists and parents will make works of art demonstrating elements and principles of design present in Cubist masterpieces in the UIMA collection.

"View and DO" family art activities offer the child-adult teams a chance to explore historical ideas or design concepts through tours of the gallery and related activity under the guidance of an educator and practicing artist.

View and DO is an activity that all members of the family can get into. "The emphasis is on the do," Dale Fisher, the UIMA's director of education, said. "The parents do fine once the kids teach them how to play."

One recent "View and DO" program invited families to learn about contrast by exploring digital portraiture, and another led participants through an introduction to abstract art based on the museum's fine collection of 20th-century American art.

The activity is especially geared towards children between the ages of six and 10, as well as their parents and grandparents. Each child must be accompanied by one adult. "View and DO: A Family Art Activity" is open to the public and costs $10 per child and adult team. For registration information, call 319-335-3232.

The UI Museum of Art, located on North Riverside Drive in Iowa City, is open noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. It is closed Monday and Tuesday. Admission is free. Public metered parking is available in UI parking lots west and north of the museum.
