UI Welcomes Hawkeye Community College to the 2 Plus 2 Transfer Plan

Students at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo are now eligible to join the University of Iowa's new 2 Plus 2 Guaranteed Graduation Plan for transfer students.

Under the 2 Plus 2 plan, UI advisors will help Hawkeye Community College students select the right courses to receive an Associate of Arts degree in two years at their community college and successfully transfer to Iowa, where they can earn a bachelor's degree in just two more years, guaranteed.

The 2 Plus 2 plan is currently available to Hawkeye students pursuing about 15 UI majors, including business, psychology and social work. This program is for forward thinking community college students who plan to transfer to the University of Iowa.

This agreement provides a smooth transition for graduates from Iowa community colleges who wish to transfer to the UI. Students can make their college education more affordable by completing some of their credits at the community college, which saves on tuition, and then transfer to a four-year college or university.

Greg Schmitz, president of Hawkeye Community College states, "We are very pleased to work with the University of Iowa on this new venture.  This agreement gives our students even more options. We view this partnership as another initiative that will encourage students to plan long-term to meet their goals of degree completion in four years, which will make a college education more affordable and obtainable for our students."

"We are delighted that Hawkeye Community College is coming on board with the 2 Plus 2 Guaranteed Graduation Plan," said Lola Lopes, UI Interim Executive Vice President and Provost. "Students who complete associate degrees at community colleges already have enhanced prospects for graduation from Iowa compared to community college transfers who do not complete a degree.

"Participation in the 2 Plus 2 Plan will go beyond this by helping smooth the transition to a new campus and a new academic environment and by showing students how to move quickly and effectively through their final years of study," Lopes added.

The addition of Hawkeye Community College to the 2 Plus 2 program marks the completion of the university's efforts to make the 2 Plus 2 program accessible to transfer students coming to Iowa from any public community college in the state. The UI welcomed more than 1,000 new transfer students from Iowa community colleges throughout 2006-07.

Earlier this year, the university also announced a new $1,000 scholarship for incoming 2 Plus 2 students with the highest grade-point averages. Overall, the 2 Plus 2 program is designed to help ease the transition between schools.

To benefit most from the degree-planning assistance of 2 Plus 2, students are encouraged to enroll in the plan during their first year of community college. High school students also are encouraged to investigate the plan's potential to save them time and money in pursuit of a four-year degree.

In addition to early advising, 2 Plus 2 students enjoy access to UI library and career-planning resources and discounted admission to select UI cultural and athletic events with their Iowa One Card, the official UI student ID.

Hawkeye Community College offers more than 48 academic programs and options and the latest in technology, training facilities, and innovative learning options.  High school students can take postsecondary classes, career academy classes, and contracted classes; adult learners can take Learning After Fifty classes. In addition to credit classes, Hawkeye offers many continuing education classes.
