UI launches math preparation Web site for high school students

The University of Iowa this month launched a Web site to help high school students understand the math background they will need to pursue various majors at the UI.

Called Math Matters @ Iowa (, the site offers quizzes, tutorials, and sample UI final exams to help students gauge how close they are to mastering the appropriate topics in math. It also serves as a resource for parents and teachers, with information about why math preparation is important for college and how parents and teachers can help students prepare to succeed in university-level courses.

"Being prepared in math is important in many of the most popular college majors," says Joyce Moore, director of UI's Evaluation and Examination Service. "We hope this site will be a valuable planning tool as students map out their high school coursework."

The Math Matters Web site is a joint project of the Academic Advising Center, the Department of Mathematics, Evaluation and Examination Service, and faculty affiliated with Iowa City West High School.
