UI Offers New Dual Degree In Law And Public Health

The University of Iowa Colleges of Law and Public Health have collaborated to offer a new combined Juris Doctorate and Master of Public Health (J.D./M.P.H.) degree. The dual degree program provides an opportunity for law students to receive formal training in public health and law, develop special expertise in public health legal issues, and prepare for leadership roles in both the public and private sectors.

"This new degree allows the College of Public Health to partner with the College of Law to attract competent students who are interested in the intersection of the fields of public health and law," said Mary Aquilino, College of Public Health assistant dean and director of the Master of Public Health degree program. "A multidisciplinary student body enriches the teaching and learning environment and prepares students to enter the workforce with a better understanding of the potential contributions of various professions in assuring the public's health."

Individuals holding the J.D./M.P.H. degree will have employment opportunities in public health agencies at all levels, law firms and other legal organizations with health law practices, health advocacy groups, public health governmental agencies, and foundations and nonprofit agencies with health-related services. The areas of human rights, terrorism, land use, insurance and domestic violence, as well as many other areas of public health and law, make the collaboration an important one for the related commitments of the two degrees.

Applicants for the degree must be accepted into both the J.D. program and the M.P.H. program. With cross-crediting of several courses, it is anticipated that both degrees can be completed within four years. To date, several students have completed the M.P.H. in addition to the J.D.

The degree is currently offered at 11 other U.S. universities. For more information about the degree program, contact Lily French at 319-384-5991 or
