Iowa Alumni Magazine Staff Members Win National Writing Award

Two staff members of Iowa Alumni Magazine, the University of Iowa Alumni Association's flagship publication, recently received a national writing award in a competition that recognizes the best practices and communications of alumni and educational organizations across the country.

Associate editor Kathryn Howe and editor Tina Owen were honored for their article "A Monster Called Meth," which told the story of a UI alumna who overcame a methamphetamine addiction. They earned a silver medal for "Best Article of the Year" in the Council for Advancement and Support of Education's (CASE) national Circle of Excellence awards program. The feature, written by Howe and edited by Owen, appeared in the December 2006 issue of Iowa Alumni Magazine.

In this year's competition, judges read 252 entries in the "Best Article of the Year" category, awarding six gold, nine silver and nine bronze medals.

This is the first national award that Iowa Alumni Magazine has received for writing, although several of the magazine's covers, and its online presence, have been recognized nationally by CASE. The breakthrough award places Iowa Alumni Magazine in the same league as premier alumni magazines from universities such as Yale, Portland, Brown, Chicago, Duke, Notre Dame, Johns Hopkins, and Penn State.

Iowa Alumni Magazine is published bimonthly for members of the UI Alumni Association.
